But solving mysteries, much like surviving as a farmer, takes commitment. And those who are willing to sink hours into Gleaner Heights -- either for its agrarian elements, Lynchian plot, or both -- are in for a treat. Though it has some rough edges, including occasional script-related issues and town-wide events that seem to ignore changes players have enacted around the village, Gleaner Heights has enough content to make it feel like an instant cult classic.

These negatives don't do much to stifle my enjoyment of the game, but results may vary. Gleaner Heights is not a game I would recommend to younger gamers or those who did not experience early Harvest Moon games. The above said, I would recommend Gleaner Heights to anyone who fell in love with the farming RPGs of yore or anyone who really enjoys figuring things out on their own. There is a distinct lack of spoonfeeding here, and I'd like to keep it that way.

So should you play Gleaner Heights? If you can handle doing a lot of boring, repetitive tasks and blindly trying to find narrative triggers, then the story is absolutely worth the effort. It’s one of the best mystery/horror stories in recent years. But I wouldn’t blame you if you think it’s just not the worth the effort.
