This genre is increasingly being dominated by smaller firms with a passion for the projects they work on and a deep involvement with their player base. Galactic Civilizations III is good (and I love the cutscenes which really build up the universe), it’s just not good enough to stand out in such a crowded market, particularly due to its endgame and micromanagement problems.

Thankfully, there's a pretty discrete number of subsystems to learn, so there's a plateau after climbing that cliff where you know what the game can throw at you. ...Add that to the potential for players with high end computers to go for an "Insane" size map, with a hundred rival empires, tens of minor species, and half a million hexes of galactic territory? Galactic Civilizations III gives players thousands of hours of game. Before multiplayer.

Galactic Civilizations III has something to offer everyone, from the most bloodthirsty space pirates to puppetmasters operating from the shadows. Despite the availability of campaign and multiplayer modes, playing skirmish after skirmish is where the experience shines. It’s a fun, deep, and somehow accessible entry in a genre that’s often viewed as complicated and excessively complex.
