Fear Effect Sedna‘s stylish presentation and understanding of the old games’ atmosphere feels severely let down by the terrible tactical action, bad AI, boring level design and annoying cover shooting. Even what should be the biggest appeals of the game, the voice acting and writing, just feel flat as a whole. It’s not like Fear Effect Sedna is offensively bad (except when you mess up a puzzle for the dozenth time in a row) but it does nothing to endear you.

What else is there to say? The art style is cool and retro, sort of Telltale-like. It’s trying to update the original games, and it succeeds. I’d call it timeless, but not gorgeous. Otherwise, the whole affair feels sort of perfunctory. That’s a shame because I know that Fear Effect has a cult following. Maybe this is exactly what they want? For the rest of us, Fear Effect Sedna is sort of an interesting artifact; a game out of its own time. If only playing it was any fun.

Fear Effect Sedna is largely relying on nostalgia to sell itself, and for someone who has no interest in the series, there is little reason to get involved now. Even fans are going to have to slog through it to some extent, and the game's frustrating and generally clunky execution makes it a hard sell to anyone, regardless of platform or their relationship with the Fear Effects of old.
