F1 2017 isn’t light years ahead of the already very good F1 2016 but the new cars, retro content, and the juiced-up career mode make a very strong case for the upgrade, and I really appreciated the enhanced force feedback on a wheel. Rich with details and faithful to just about everything that makes contemporary F1 tick, F1 2017 is about as good a simulation of a single, modern motorsport as you can get.

F1 2017 is as much as you could hope for from a series with such a Sisyphean release cadence: polished, more authentic than ever, and brings well-optimised visual improvements to PC. Until the real sport signs off on loop-de-loops, this is as good as virtual F1 gets.

These little slights provide minor drag on a fantastic racing game. The initial bite of the learning curve may frustrate newcomers, but it’s rewarding and gratifying to persevere with. Delivering some much-needed variety to what was – only two years ago – a scant selection of modes and options, Codemasters has tweaked and refined a Formula one driving experience that is, as of writing, unrivalled. Project Cars 2 lurks just round the corner, but it would require an awful lot to overtake this.
