Never before has Codemasters delivered something so closely resembling a free download from a community modding site. One question remains; one ray of hope. If F1 2014 is the lacklustre McLaren MP4-24 from 2009, hamstrung by a need to focus on yesterday’s hardware, will the next Codemasters F1 game be akin to the Brawn BGP-001, light years ahead of its competition? We can but hope.

F1 2014 feels like something that needs to exist while Codemasters works on rebuilding the foundations for next-gen. There’s much less here than in previous entries, so it’s hard to justify picking it up to anyone outside of hardcore F1 fans. F1 2013 now feels like the pinnacle of the series on 360 and PS3, and for those looking for the evolution of F1 games, you’re going to have to wait and see what the developer has up its sleeve in 2015.

F1 2014 is ultimately a disappointing release, not because F1 2015 is just around the corner, but because it doesn’t do enough on its own merits to push the game series beyond F1 2013, a game which I already felt was struggling with a degree of stagnation. It’s still fundamentally a good game and the recreation of the sport’s new rules and regulations do help to make driving the cars a slightly fresher challenge....
