The question of which Devil May Cry game is the best has gotten much easier with Devil May Cry 5. The combat is the strongest the series has seen to date, the story does a great job of balancing all three of its main characters and doling out rewarding bits of its mysterious story at an enticing pace, and the unlockable difficulties, sheer number of techniques to earn, and the upcoming free Bloody Palace DLC will provide a ton of incentive for replayability. It’s good to have you back, Dante and Nero.

Devil May Cry V is a glorious return to the form we all know and love, but it also provides a substantial amount of innovation by providing a few and bushes new ideas. The definitive traits of the series are still there, seasoned with some new mechanics, diverse characters and metric tons of charm and bravado. Devil May Cry 5 is the best proof that you don’t have to change the essence of the game in order to make it fresh and exciting.

Nero’s fun to play as and perfectly okay, but I hope we get a game focused more heavily on giving one character a ton of depth and a steady flow of new weapons. Ultimately, while DMC 5 panders to exactly what fans want in some areas, it simultaneously going out of its way to not giving them what they want in others. Perhaps one day the series will focus on what it does best. For now, though, I’m glad DMC is back, and I’m glad it’s better than DMC 4.
