I don’t like being so harsh on Depth of Extinction. I really wanted to like it more than I did. It’s just so full of potential. Each system has so many clever ideas… but the fundamentals aren’t there. This is the first game from HOF Studios and it proves they are a team to watch. But the main measure of a game like this is how much you want to keep going. Do you always want to play just one more turn?
The downside here is that although the gameplay is fun, it does get a bit boring if you play for longer sessions. You basically repeat the same actions without much variation. But if you're a fan of old-school turn-based games, then you will enjoy the hell out of Depth of Extinction. So at the end of the day, it's all a matter of perception and taste.
It's difficult to imagine, though, many players enjoying Depths of Extinction for long stretches of time. Whether this will change with upcoming patches it's hard to say, but it's difficult to be more enthusiastic for a game that, in the large scale, is more monotonic than entertainment should be.
