When a small mining community falls silent, a young soldier named Daltyn is sent to investigate. Upon arriving in the remote mountain town of Karthas, he discovers that paranormal forces have sealed the town off from the outside world. Now trapped, he's left with no option but to explore the mines below the town and uncover the source of the disturbances. Six huge procedurally-generated areas await, each lovingly crafted in a retro pixel art style. Chasm is a good Metroidvania game. But it feels like it could have been better at certain points. A game that took five years to develop feels like it should offer more than Chasm currently does. Is that an unfair assessment? Possibly, but then maybe you should ask someone who kickstarted it if they’re happy with what they received after all these years.
Although the odd ride that is Chasm may slump excessively in the first two zones and doesn’t really stand out from the pack due to the underwhelming procedural generation, it manages to find a steadier footing after the first five or so hours. Still, it’s hard to justify slogging through that many hours for what is by no means exceptional. Updates may improve the experience of the first two zones, perhaps by giving the player a few new toys to play with.
Chasm is one of the finest Metroidvania games ever created. While the game’s developmental journey was longer than expected, the wait was well-worth it. Every aspect of the game shows that a great deal of care was put into it and the attention to detail for the core gameplay pays off in spades. There are many different ways to play Chasm and all of them result in an unforgettable experience.
