There’s some meat on these bones. Boneworks offers a fleshed-out variety of interesting and entertaining physics-powered things to do across its full-length campaign, Arena, and Sandbox modes, and its VR action works best when you get into character and let yourself pantomime each swing, grab, and throw with intention. There’s plenty to be desired in terms of story, level design, and even the physics simulations that it so heavily leans on, but Boneworks is awesomely interactive, engaging, and has tons of replayability potential.

That need not be such a damning statement, though. Boneworks never sweeps you away on the same kind of rollercoaster ride its biggest influences charted, but you’d be hardpressed not to get carried away on its own journey; one of interactive wizardry, devilishly gratifying combat and stunning physical authenticity, even if that occasionally works against you. Ultimately it might not be the VR shooter to turn the heads of the masses, but if you want to see where that future lies, you can’t miss Boneworks.

There's a lot about its immersion that other VR games could learn from, and hopefully build an overall better game around. If nothing else, its Valve-inspired visuals and puzzles may hold some fans over until they can get their hands on Half-Life: Alyx. In the meantime, Boneworks is the kind of game that people can use to show their friends some of VR's more exciting capabilities, though it's a little rough around the edges to be something that one will want to spend all their time playing.
