Below’s death mechanics can be devastating and off-putting, and caused me to bounce off the game several times. The survival nags are annoying, and the grinding for a safety net feels like a busy chore, but the overall combination of stylized graphics and soundtrack create an incredible universe that begs to be experienced. You need serious tenacity and perseverance to see the sights, but they are wonders worth seeing.

The same goes for a convincing and effective ambient soundtrack by Canadian musician Jim Guthrie, which will constantly follow you along the way through this caverns, like an eerie, warped echo of your very own footsteps. To sum it up, be sure to try out Below. It is a fine creation in every respect, from basic concept to the execution – just don’t expect your usual action-adventure experience, and you should be ok.

For those who do want a hardcore challenge, Below is a great pick up. If you’re tired of tacked on tutorials or games that will beat the level for you if you fail too many times, Below is going to be right up your alley. It’s a strong realization of the developer’s intent, and it’s also a game that can entrance you and suck you in for hours on end. Ideally, the hours of midnight through 4 a.m. Headphones and bong not included.
