Battlezone: Combat Commander is a relic of its time. It’s clear this is a love letter to fans of the original, a nicer way to play a game plagued with some unfortunate problems back when it was released. A.I. is okay. The story takes a while to get going. Some of the mechanics are clunky, and the presentation is basic apart from improved unit models and environments.
A great game in its time, but one that has not aged well enough for it to stand up today with just updated visuals, especially when the cutscenes are omitted from that update.
Inspired mix of genres works well, allowing you to emphasise whichever you prefer. Lots of modes and vehicles, with plenty of multiplayer options. Good quality remaster. The story campaign is more timid about the strategy elements than the original, and takes a while to get going. Some of the vehicles aren’t that much fun to control. Some performance issues.
