You play as Trace, a relatively normal (if quirky) guy who suffers a near-fatal injury, after which he wakes up in a strange, unsettling new world that is both high-tech and incredibly ancient. Why is he here? Where are the world's inhabitants? And what is the mysterious force that seems intent on ending his life?

I had no idea I'd enjoy Axiom Verge so much. Whereas many modern takes on classic retro genres fall foul of style over substance, this has been built with such skill that it doesn't need to rely on our annoying fondness of the past to impress. I had a dream about exploring underground tunnels the other night, and I rarely ever dream about anything. Axiom Verge has made a big and lasting impression.

Axiom Verge joins the superb Shovel Knight as a game that doesn’t just borrow the aesthetic of retro games, but understands why they worked so well as games too. It’s one of the purest expressions of the ‘Metroidvania’ genre on PC, focusing on tight design, minimal story, and addictive, rewarding exploration. Be warned, though: another way it pays homage to the past is with its stiff difficulty.

On the gameplay side you can add a marker on the map - useful if you see an area inaccessible and want to return when you have the ability needed. Aside from the minor combat issue, Axiom Verge is a treat to play, joining the likes of Spelunky and the Binding of Isaac as the game I keep in one corner of my screen when I really should be working. ...A homage to retro classics is one thing but having gameplay that’s both challenging and fun makes Axiom Verge special.
