Astroneer is a lot of things - base management sim, mining game, exploration title, open-world sandbox adventure - yet all of it works, easily outclassing its contemporaries in the genre. If all you ever wanted from a space exploration title is to have fun and enjoy the game at your own pace, then there is no better choice out there than Astroneer. It's an exceedingly good title that's made even better with the many ways you can play it.

Astroneer succeeds when it's enraptured you with its beautiful visuals and the irresistible call to explore the planet you find yourself on. Although it lacks a central through line to give you guidance, the variety of structures you can build helps point you towards new resources to hunt for. It struggles to incentivise you to sufficiently explore other planets within its single solar system, however, while also forcing you to work with an inventory system that is often unwieldy.

A game that I can call on when I’m looking for something relaxing that allows me to build and create. Something I can walk away from and come back to at my convenience and not feel like I’m missing out. It provides an experience that is generally therapeutic and almost never stressful. It’s not a perfect game, but it’s the kind of game that could be perfect for certain situations or groups of gamers looking for their next adventure.
