I was hoping to find a game that will use up my time this holiday. Planetfall was recommended as a game similar to Civilization V.

Playing the game at first, I was a little confused, but then I didn't realize I spent two straight days just to achieve the campaign victory.

Story-wise it's not that amazing. But, I was blown by its gameplay. As a 4X strategy gamer, its strategic and tactical gameplay is perfect.

The good part is that there are a lot of factions to choose from, there are unique units for each faction and mods that you can choose to upgrade your unit.

However, each faction feels a little bit similar to each other, for example, they all have the same structure and social development.

I just wish that they put more depth into how each faction should be or will be played, like unique structures or mechanics to each factions gains and weaknesses.

I was hoping to have a Civilization vibe. But instead, the game is similar to the classic, Disciples II and Heroes of Might and Magic with a sci-fi twist, which feels very nostalgic and I really appreciate it.

Overall, a great game for a hardcore 4X strategy fan.

There is a lot more to unpack with Planetfall that we haven’t mentioned, but we’d rather not spoil the fun you’ll have finding out for yourself. All you really need to know is that this is easily the best game of the series, and the best sci-fi 4X game you’ll play this year (and probably for a few years to come).

Yet the end project is undeniably brilliant with a fantastic tone and theme that sets it apart from competitors, a full range of modes in both SP and MP to engage anyone it needs too, and gameplay that’s been refined and near perfected. This year has been pretty incredible for strategy fans, and this is yet another one of those can’t miss titles.

If you're a fan of Age of Wonders, or 4X in general, you're going to love Planetfall. While it has a steep learning curve, once you learn the ropes it becomes very fun, very fast. Planetfall combines systems like Civilization with XCOM in a way that blends the two genres together for a wonderful mashup of fun.
