Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Celebrates 500,000 Copies Sold

Nintendo is never short of cute adventure games, and that’s what they got earlier this month with the release of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin from developer Edelweiss. Besides the game getting sparkling reviews online, Sakuna has apparently reached a major milestone in less than 3 weeks of its release.

As it turns out, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has already sold 500,000 copies across multiple platforms. Executive VP at publisher XSEED Games had this to say about reaching the milestone so fast:

"We’ve known that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was a special game and would have broad appeal since our first meeting with Edelweiss… The game has been in development for many years, and we’re beyond excited at the reception it has received globally from critics and consumers alike. Thank you to everyone who has accompanied Sakuna and her companions on their journey!"

The game has a very lovely cartoon/anime aesthetic, and you’re sure to fall in love with the character designs, from the main protagonist Sakuna to the bosses that she fights all over this fantastical game. Besides that, there’s always some multi-generational appeal when it comes to the simplicity of sidescrollers; so I’m not curious that a lot of people wanted to check it out when it was released.

The standard edition of the game is now available for $39.99 for the PS Store, Nintendo eShop, and PC, but you can cash out for the deluxe versions for $54.99 (PC) and $49.99 (PS4). You can also purchase a retail version called the “Divine Edition” for $39.99 (PS4) and $59.99 (Switch).

Here’s the official description of the game:

Developed by Edelweiss, the team behind acclaimed indie darling Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines side-scrolling action with deep crafting and rice cultivation. Players take on the role of Sakuna, a spoiled harvest goddess banished to a dangerous island with a group of outcast humans. As she explores the beautiful, forbidding environments of the island, she will also find a home in a mountain village, proving herself worthy of her title by harvesting rice and bettering the lives of humans. In addition to being a fresh take on Japanese mythology and a love letter to action games, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is an ode to rice and an engrossing simulation of the craft behind the agriculture.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is now available for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
