Where Shadows Slumber is a mobile adventure puzzle game that takes place in a world that has been plunged into darkness. You will guide Obe, an old man who discovers a mysterious lantern in the forest, on one last journey. The only tools at your disposal are your wits and the chaotic nature of the universe. Anything that is not touched by light has the freedom to change. This governing principle will be your guide in the darkness, but also your undoing. After all, if you are not touched by the light, you have the freedom to change as well. What will you become?

There are some really rough edges to Where Shadows Slumber, but it didn’t stop me from wanting to play it through to the end. Its combination of creative and challenging puzzles mixed with an intensely dark story made me want to see it through, and I’m glad that I did. Personally, I’d much rather play something with the flawed ambition of Where Shadows Slumber than an overly polished, iterative puzzle adventure, but I also realize that not everyone else feels that way.
It’s unfortunate because Where Shadows Slumber gets a lot of things right. The pace is pretty good, the game looks and sounds great, and on an individual level some of the puzzles are fun to untangle. The games shines with potential, and that does take it a good distance. As such, I’d probably still recommend the game, even if I can’t do so as enthusiastically as I would have liked to. It’s buggy, the design feels inconsistent, and the story keels over at the last minute, but you may want to put up with all of that if only to get at the bits that work.
Where Shadows Slumber mixes light and darkness in some intelligent and incredibly engaging ways.
