Mikey Hooks‘ only real hiccup is that the controls aren’t perfect. I know, I know, I said that they are some of the best platforming controls I’ve had the pleasure to play on a touch-screen – but they’re still not spot-on. The sliding in particular feels irksome at times, especially on the later levels which require far more precision thanks to the plethora of spikes and traps scattered about the place.

The wacky costumes (including hats from indie games) are back and plentiful. This is one of the most polished experiences in iOS gaming, and it has grappling hooks now. I offer Mikey Hooks my highest recommendation.

Despite having a virtual d-pad and buttons, Mikey Hooks is a great addition to any platformer fan's portable library. Although I don't think it surpasses Hook Champ as an absolute must-buy, it's a really fun game in its own right, and a perfect example of a serviceable platform game on iOS

Mikey Hooks does exactly what you'd hope from a sequel: keeps everything about the original that worked while at the same time adds some new mechanics and ideas to offer a new experience. It fires on all cylinders, and if you're a fan of the previous games you don't even need this review to determine if you should get it or not–you probably have already bought it.

Like its predecessor, Mikey Hooks is a solid title that’s full of lots of fun platforming action. For the price, it’s certainly worth adding to your library if you are looking for some fast-paced fun. And most importantly, it does right by the grappling hook.

Mikey Hooks isn’t a deep and involved RPG or a tactical strategy game that will make you change the way you look at iOS, but it is an insanely fun game that will change the way you look at your clock. It’s difficult in all the right ways, it controls like a dream, the graphics are wonderful, and the game is just a heck of a lot of fun.

Graphics are simple yet cute with a nostalgic touch that brings you back to the golden age of platformers. Expect extremely responsive controls and humor in abundance. Only one catch worth mentioning: the game isn't difficult to beat. It should be enhanced in that regard, either by increasing difficulty gradually or by adding more level packs. Regardless, Mikey Hooks is the platformer you should install next.

If doing better isn't really your cup of tea then Mikey Hooks is best avoided. If, on the other hand, you think that every millisecond and extra gold star matter, then the bite-size arcade fun on offer here is going to be the perfect fit. A brilliant mix of precision and fun, Mikey Hooks is a worthy sequel to its illustrious forebear.

It's simple fun, and doesn't deviate far from the original formula. But, when you pull off that perfect run, you'll remember why you liked gaming in the first place. Despite the new hookshot mechanic, Mikey Hooks feels very familiar to its predecessor. However, when your predecessor was one of the best platformers on iOS, that not necessarily a bad thing.
