It's not just the journey and the puzzles that have remained intact here, though. Most importantly, nothing about the original game's feverishly bleak visuals and haunting ambient audio work has been lost in translation. Despite it's overwhelmingly gray palette, Limbo remains a beautifully grim work of art - one that shines particularly brightly on a Retina display.
Limbo can be elegant and even morbidly funny, but the punchline hinges on retrospective goodwill, after you've brute forced your way through the puzzles and seen the entire Rube Goldberg machine in action.
Limbo's visuals are unparalleled. The gameplay, while not overly complex and slightly less fine-tuned as its console cousin, is more than adequate. And the overall package is really quite solid. Playdead knows this and the price tag reflects that polish. But is Limbo worth it? Well, there certainly are no shortage of beautiful physics puzzle/platformers already in the App Store, but there's not many that can match Limbo's overall quality.
