The series still hasn't managed to top this one, and given how much obvious heart and soul was put into the game, I doubt it ever will. I wish the save system was handled better with mobile gamers in mind, and landscape support would be lovely for those who prefer to play that way, but apart from those criticisms, I've got nothing bad to say about this shining masterpiece.

Given the high price of other copies of Dragon Quest V, fans will certainly be forgiving, and rightly so. It’s a particularly fine installment for the solidly dependable series and one that’s sure to hook you in for a long time. Even if you do stumble awkwardly back into buildings thanks to that virtual d-pad.

Rest assured, the stakes eventually rise, and Dragon Quest V sends you on a trip that’s more than worthy of the series’ legacy. You grow up, experience loss, travel with friends, travel alone, fight monsters, and befriend monsters. Dragon Quest V has everything a decent RPG ought to be made of, and more.
