Dragon Quest II can be viewed as the series’ gangly teenage stage. It’s a bit slow and awkward at times, and it presents neat new ideas that don’t reach their full potential until Dragon Quest III and beyond. If you’re a Dragon Quest fiend, or you’re just a collector of mobile JRPGs, by all means pick it up. If you’re new to all this excitement and are unsure of where to start, pick up Dragon Quest IV, or wait until Dragon Quest III inevitably rears its rough rump.

Dragon Quest II was a good game when it came out in 1990, and its modern presentation is still effective and enjoyable. If you’re a classic RPG fan or just want to see what all the fuss we old-timers make is all about, this rendition of a classic is assuredly worth a look.

This is without a doubt the best version of Dragon Quest 2 we've had officially released in English, and if you enjoyed the recent release of the first game, you should have no concerns about jumping in here and taking on the next adventure. It still has its flaws, but for a game coming up on its 28th birthday, it's more enjoyable than you might expect.
