On the surface, it may exist as a nice little ocean shooter surrounded with beautiful pictures, but after compulsively playing this app for over an hour, I was still entranced by this enchanting world. It’s hard to describe the seductive power of Abyss Attack’s visual design, but its deep waters can only be eclipsed by the breadth of one’s imagination.
The game looks and sounds great, plays well, and doesn’t bog players down with a slew of unwanted microtransactions. The gameplay is simple and familiar, yet well done. Enemies and locations are creative and the action is non-stop joy for shooter fans. Beyond that, though, the sheer amount of goals and achievements make the game incredibly addictive.
On the one hand, it's an intriguing idea that's more than worth the dollar asking price, at least up until the point where you become a little bored with your meager progress. On the other hand, you're clearly meant to make far more meaningful progress given the mission and upgrade systems, and so a greater part of the game design simply doesn't work. Fans of either genre will certainly enjoy their time with this new hybrid title, but neither camp is likely to be entirely satisfied.
