A Normal Lost Phone is a game about exploring the intimacy of an unknown person whose phone was found by the player. The game takes the shape of a narrative investigation: you have to search the phone’s text messages, pictures and applications, in order to learn about its former owner. A Normal Lost Phone is thoughtfully designed, leveraging voyeurism, curiosity, responsibility, and compassion to tell a strong, character-driven story unlocked through satisfying puzzle-solving.
A Normal Lost Phone may not be the longest or most mechanically dense game out there, but I enjoyed every moment I spent with it. It's writing and story are so well presented that your phone snooping feels incredibly real and personal. It's a level of intimacy that most other video games completely fail to capture, which just goes to show how special A Normal Lost Phone is.
When a game stylishly schools me about social issues, I consider it a winner. But when a game is able to actively educate me on a subject I wrongly thought I understood, I have to consider it a great achievement. A Normal Lost Phone may be a short, sweet experience, but its frank exploration of LGBTQ+ issues and bravery to wade into social territory where few games have gone before means it is a must-buy, and must-learn.
