GAMES OF THE YEAR 2023

We played games whose stories and rich world we could live in for hours, months, and even years. Many of us craved those monumental experiences. Living thousands of lives. Conquering colossal bosses. Soaring the skies and diving into the deepest depths to save our friends.

While endings have slowly vanished from the equation, they still offer us a lot. Whether in the form of resolutions or unanswered questions.

2023 hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows, but we did witness a lot of things that made our hearts sing. What whatoplay offers for the end of this year is a celebration of all those things and the hope that more excitement is coming over the horizon.

2023 GAME OF THE YEAR

Critics or gamers? It doesn't matter. When it comes to our 2023 Game of the Year, critics and gamers agreed to give their highest marks to…

Baldur's Gate 3
Developed by Larian Studios
The success of Baldur's Gate 3 was no stroke of luck. Larian Studios' latest CRPG is a carefully crafted adventure with all the magic and freedom of its pen-and-paper origins. With versatile combat and vivid narratives for almost every character, what could've been a niche success has captured the hearts of the mainstream.
TOP GAMES BY PLATFORM

PC, console, or mobile, we all have our little kingdoms. In 2023, we tracked all 8 modern platforms aggregating 18,056 critic reviews and 35,786,193 gamer ratings. Who ruled who? Let's find out:

9.6
Baldur's Gate 3
Developed by Larian Studios
Despite coming from a long line of CRPGs before it, few can rival what this game offers: in scope, narrative depth, and customization. For long-time genre fans, it's a homecoming to truly inventive role-playing.
9.7
Baldur's Gate 3
Developed by Larian Studios
It's hard to emphasize how monumental a game like Baldur's Gate is. When you can restart a game after more than a hundred hours of gameplay and get a completely unique experience, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that it has set a new bar for immersion and replayability.
9.3
Resident Evil 4
Developed by Capcom
For a game as highly-regarded as Resident Evil 4, Capcom's Remake manages to hit the mark. It goes heavy on the action, bestowing players a new sense of freedom without putting its signature horrors in the backseat. Packed to the brim with high-stakes tension and ever more gruesome carnage, it has surprised fans and newcomers alike.
9.7
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Developed by Nintendo
With Nintendo's unfathomable ingenuity, our return to Hyrule feels as fresh as the first time. It's fleshed out with new domains and new skills that give way to a whole world of experimental interactions to become not just a showcase of Nintendo's creativity, but ours too.
9.4
Resident Evil 4
Developed by Capcom
Though there might have been drawbacks in this cross-gen release, Resident Evil 4 has been impressive nonetheless. Textural differences aside, it delivered on its promise of modern action-horror elevated further by its ingenious audio design.
9.0
COCOON
Developed by Geometric Interactive
From the simplicity of its controls, you wouldn't guess at the stark complexity that Cocoon offers. What minimalism they have in movement, they make up for with intricate worlds-within-worlds puzzles and a peppering of engaging boss fights.
8.8
Reverse: 1999
Developed by Bluepoch
While the visual novel presentation might add to its lightweight size, its charm and visuals are anything but. It took on the turn-based gacha market with its impressive art direction that beautifully complements its story and roster of characters.
9.4
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge
Developed by Tribute Games Inc.
It already hit the spotlight on consoles last year. This year was the iOS's turn to wax nostalgic over its reduplication of 90s co-op brawlers and pixel graphics.

IT'S JUST EMOTIONS

While some games can get us in our feelings, some games do not spark joy. You let it all out and you weren't alone.

Most Hated
The game with the lowest playscore this year.
Cover Art
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
Developed by Daedalic Entertainment

What could've been a compelling look into the storied life of an iconic Tolkien character became nothing but an exercise in tedium. Playing through the bugs, unwieldy controls, and awkward stealth mechanics was like being taken down into Gollum's own descent into madness.

Most Disappointing
We had such high hopes, but it just didn't deliver.
Cover Art
Forspoken
Developed by Luminous Productions

Forspoken's public fate is less vitriol and more dismissive eye roll. It had great visuals but with poor optimization; and a decent open-world exploration constantly interrupted by a talkative cuff. The real crime here is how it gets in its way.

Most Divisive Game
Good or bad? No one can seem to agree.
Cover Art
Forza Motorsport
Developed by Turn 10 Studios

Critics might tell you Forza Motorsport's souped-up realism and racing dynamics are worth swooning over. On the other hand, long-time fans would counter that its new progression system left them fuming.

The game that blue-balled us
We wanted it, and we almost got it. But we didn't.
Cover Art
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Developed by GSC Game World

Caught amidst the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, GSC Gameworld's decision to delay is understandable. However, in light of the game's positive previews and this year's dearth of atmospheric shooters, we just can't help but feel a little impatient.

Sleeper Hit
An amazing game that seemed to come out of nowhere
Cover Art
Hi-Fi RUSH
Developed by Tango Gameworks

Not bad for a surprise launch. This flashy rhythm action had heads turning and banging to its beat. From its flashy animations to its pitch-perfect gameplay, Hi-Fi Rush hits every high note and it's here to stay.

There's a daring in Tears of the Kingdom's commitment to the single-player experience. Understanding the intimacy of a player against a world of exciting challenges, it offers us the private joys of discovering all its wonderful secrets.

cover art
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Top Action Game
Developed by Insomniac Games

When it comes to high-flying action, no one does it like Spider-Man 2. Combining the powers of Miles, Peter, and Venom, the usual combat ballet gave way to harder hits and the new traversal skills made us feel as much like Spider-Man as we could ever hope.

cover art
Baldur's Gate 3
Top Roleplaying Game
Developed by Larian Studios

It is a once-in-a-generation masterpiece; there has never been an RPG quite like this. Its faithfulness to tactical RPG might feel old school. But, the dense world, dizzying combat options, rich stories, and endless interactive possibilities are nothing if not ground-breaking.

cover art
Street Fighter 6
Top Fighting Game
Developed by Capcom

Capcom ushers in an era of friendly fighting by opening up the SF arena to a new generation of fighters. With the Drive System that takes fights from 0 to 100, and a World Tour that takes you through the ropes, Street Fighter 6 is the perfect welcome basket.

cover art
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew
Top Strategy Game
Developed by Mimimi Games

Before the heartbreak of Mimimi Games' shutdown, they gave us another one of their virtuoso strategies. Their nuanced and rewarding tactical mechanics are on full display in this stealth pirate package. All of it is balanced out by its unsurprisingly gorgeous presentation.

cover art
Alan Wake II
Top Horror Game
Developed by Remedy Entertainment

The new chapter in the writer's block saga emerges as a runaway success. Alan Wake II is a compelling double feature. Saga's detective work and Alan's Dark Place are brimming with a blend of top-notch puzzles, intense gunplay, and spine-chilling environmental scares. From Control to this stunning sequel, Remedy has cast itself as a master of the craft.

cover art
COCOON
Top Puzzle Game
Developed by Geometric Interactive

This wordless puzzler doesn't need dialog to take you as far as you want. Step by step, it takes you on a ride—short as it may be—from one Orb world to the next. It feels just like a Cocoon: ever-evolving yet always a comfort.

cover art
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Top Platforming Game
Developed by Nintendo

This may be a 2D Mario game but it isn't short on dimension. Its levels are brimming with charm and it's only amplified by what the Wonder Flower brings to every stage. Nintendo has set a new standard for vibrance and innovation in Mario games, and this one definitely lives up to its name.

cover art
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
Top JRPG Game
Developed by Square Enix

A true testament to the principle of “if it ain't broke.” Everything we loved about Octopath Traveler has been polished to perfection in this sequel. The characters are brand new and made more alive with enriched interactions and refined turn-based combat.

cover art
MARVEL SNAP
Top Free Game
Developed by Second Dinner

Simple yet refined, lightning quick. The iconic locations and Marvel collectibles may have been a huge draw, but there was no doubt that Marvel Snap's revolutionary card play always had the strength for a wider appeal.

cover art
Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Top Cozy Game
Developed by Sunblink

Apple Arcade got us a ticket to this full-fledged island getaway with all our favorite Sanrio characters. Loaded with content in such a small package—from cooking and decorating to all-out adventures—every day here is loaded with fun and friendship. Hello Kitty is giving Nintendo a run for its money.
