  • At the end of the day if you have a Wii U you’d be crazy not to pick up this game. If you’re still don’t own a Wii U Mario Kart 8 is yet another title to make you realize that Nintendo’s “next-gen” machine is capable of great games that the whole family can enjoy.

  • Three years on: still a classic, and with its biggest weakness fixed. If you own a Switch it’s a no-brainer – especially if it’s your first time.

  • Even if you didn't really care about Battle Mode, the smallest changes in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe refine an already great racing game. But the huge overhaul to the original's afterthought of a Battle Mode is a chaotic, varied opportunity to play very differently than in Grand Prix mode and well worth reinvesting yourself in Mario Kart 8 on Switch.

  • Despite my criticism of some of the modes and gameplay mechanics, Mario Kart 8 is still an amazing game, and as intense and addicting as its predecessors.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the greatest multiplayer experiences Nintendo has produced in a long time. With enhanced graphics, all previous DLC included as well as bonus characters, and the return of the Battle mode, this is a party game for any occasion. It is fantastic family fun for all ages, especially with Nintendo including drive-assist features for those new to gaming.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is primarily a re-release of an acclaimed game from three years ago, but by adding new content and addressing the biggest complaint of the original, this version is unquestionably the best way to experience Nintendo's great racer. Battle mode is back to its original glory, and when combined with the rest of the robust Mario Kart 8 package, it creates a great addition to the fledgling Switch library.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gives players the full package right from the starting line. With an enormous roster of both characters and raceways to select from MK8 Deluxe brings over all of the content from the Wii U edition of the game and then goes and adds more content. While those wanting the single player experience might not find too much to race for, as a multiplayer title this is a great one to challenge your friends to.

  • Ultimately, this might just be the best version of the very best Kart racer there is. If you're a Mario Kart 8 veteran then I'm not sure how much here will draw you in, but new players and multiplayer fanatics will find dozens of hours of fun.

  • It manages to blend together old tracks with the new and provides new playable characters never before seen in the Mario Kart series. Playing as the koopalings is one of the highlights of the game and it’ll be no surprise to me if everyone has a favorite once they’ve gotten their hands on the game.

  • A combination of fun, fairness, beauty and joy, Mario Kart 8 is absolutely brilliant. A botched battle mode and some missing online features stop it short of perfection, but it’s hard to imagine any Mario Kart game looking, playing, or sounding better. If you needed a reason to own a Wii U, look no further.

This is a game which surely encourages sabotaging others. Overall: 8.25/10 Sound - 9/10  From the child-like tunes of the baby park to the mesmerizing yet adrenaline-inducing music of rainbow road, the soundtrack of MK Deluxe 8 really hits you in your childhood gut even if there are some new tracks with new sound track - they still sound familiar despite your first time hearing them. Visuals - 9/10 My pet peeve about some games (especially as someone who easily gets distracted and dizzy) is having so much going on in the screen and not all of them you can interact with - oh, you see that plant over there? Yeah, it's just there. This may just be a personal preference since I understand that some people love a busy screen, but why bother to add it on there when it has no significance? I lost track of how many times I rammed myself to an invisible wall thinking it is a shortcut. Interface - 8/10 Comparing to my last experience playing Mario Kart on the gamecube (yes, that long ago), everything pretty much feels the same except it being harder to drift. Speaking of drift, here's another proof that for a console meant to be played with other family members (like kids), the switch's joycon durability will be put to the test. However, if you're playing with mostly adults, it wouldn't be much of a problem. Is it just me or are the menus more dizzying though? I remember navigating them with no problem before but now I have to take a good few seconds to make sure I'm headed the right direction - because it will suck having to realize you set a race wrong a restart setting it up all over again from the beginning. Gameplay - 7/10 What is with the physics in this game? I raced against someone bringing bowser's bulldozer and it ran faster than toad's cart. Like "weight" what? Also, what is the point of having to pick and design your cart, it's tires and the character you're bring when it has basically little to no effect on the race? I don't get it. And another thing I noticed is that it's way harder to block anything in this version now. Like, good luck if your opponent gets any good item, bad news for you. Despite my gripes about the Mario Kart, it would always be the racing game I would come back too - not because I hate realistic racing games but because it is just so perfectly evil and quirky that would make for a fun game session with friends and family. It may basically be the same game with better visuals and mechanics but that's what made Mario Kart stick with us through the years - it makes you remember simple times when it was about the experience the game gives you and how much you know you'll be missing moments like those as years will pass.

One of the best racing games out there. MK8D is a true fleshed out racing game, with top notch graphics and heart pumping races. As someone who jumped directly to the deluxe edition, it was really an impressive game for me.  Mario Kart 7, on the Nintendo 3DS, was my first Kart game experience, and it was a solid game for me, with adequate challenge. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a huge step up from that experience, with stunning visuals and intricate tracks. As I progress in faster races, the opposing AI racers get more ruthless, as if they are developing alongside you, which adds to the difficulty. I may spend hours playing the game, attempting to complete races or rank higher, and occasionally compete online. This game will never fail to offer you with excitement, whether it is a long or short session.

As a person who used to play Mario Kart on Nintendo's previous console, I can say that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe never fails to amaze me. The core gameplay is still there, with improved graphics and mechanics, it always finds a way to keep me entertained. This is a game that you can fully enjoy with your family and friends. How I wish they could've expanded this game in such a way to keep people looking to grind more races and other modes. A story-driven aspect would be nice and collectibles will also make it more fun and enjoyable. |Core Gameplay/Innovation| This is a difficult game to review, as is any Nintendo game. Why? Hardcore Nintendo fans are sick in the head and are happy with any bad decision from Nintendo. What's my point? This game is designed to reward sucking far more than being good at the core gameplay—just like Super Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Party! I get it, it's a party game, but those of us that want the core kart racer experience are left with out thumbs in our asses. Also, you can't deflect or block projectiles from behind with shells, iirc. There's a lot of really dumb changes in the formula in this game that I just can't agree with. That's why its hard to review this. There's so much good in this game, but so so so so so many little things that only really particular kart racing, arcade racing, and gamers will recognize. Little Jimmy and his sister who play a game maybe once a month won't register it. Am I just whining? I would respond to this with saying that Nintendo shouldn't have introduced so many good ideas in Mario Kart Double Dash and Mario Kart DS just to NOT use them in later games. Idiotic, honestly. The gameplay is freaking tight. Its exactly what Mario Kart should feel like. I don't like that character parameters are visible like the vehicle components, which a lot of people won't even notice since the game does a terrible job at telling us. Also, the game doesn't clearly tell you what exactly the parameters do. We just know that fat characters have better top speed and small ones have better acceleration. And in this game of constant item barrages, acceleration is the correct parameter to stack. Unless you're doing a time trial, maybe a fat character is better. I would argue that there is zero innovation in this game, whatsoever. It's literally Mario Kart 7 but better with some guest characters. Yeah, I said it. |Presentation/Style| The menus are colorful and inviting but since there really isn't much to do in this game, the menus are super bare basic. The game does a terrible job explaining anything. The handicaps that newbies use and don't even realize are active are all on by default. I get it: it's for the kids and moms and dads. Nintendo could have done a better job explaining it all though. Seriously, Nintendo has the money to work on presenting their game mechanics better in game. Some people don't even know what coins do! All of my cousins who have played this game way longer than me had no idea they could see the parameters of vehicles, that vehicle types matter, what an inside or outside bike does, that handicaps exist, what weight does in game, that boosting demands a back and forth movement on stick, etc. Some gamers don't even know that you can lower item frequency! I don't hate Nintendo, but I do believe they are completely out of touch. |Polish/Quality of Life| Why can't I turn off the blue shell? Why can't I customize the items more during races. Why can't I remap my freaking handbrake to another button. Why is gas on the A BUTTON?! LMAO. No really, someone convince me gas on a face button is a good idea. Let's see how good that goes if a manual transmission was implemented lol. I know, Kart Racer, but still. Nintendo is stupid. Even a child would prefer gas on a trigger not a face button. Basic ergonomics. It's baffling because the game actually does feel polished. It's got that Nintendo shine, but just like Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, it has some terrible terrible terrible terrible decisions: motion controls and 30fps and okay performance for both games, respectively. |Sound/Graphics| It sounds like a Mario Kart game and the graphics are super appealing. I have no complaints for the game in this department. Though, I would argue that the colors they chose for the boosting makes no sense in comparison to prior games and how color, physics, and fire works in real life. |Value/Content| What content? Everything is unlocked from the get-go lmao. Where are the boss battles? Why does battle not have more modes. Why is there no story mode? Even Sonic and Sega Racing had a story mode. It sucked, but it was there and did give me incentive to give a damn! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wants you to just sink hours into it, just do that and you'll get all the car parts. By the way, that's your reward, very goofy kart parts that do minuscule difference in core gameplay. You also can't transmog like in Team Sonic Racing so if you like how your car feels but it looks ugly, deal with it. The amount of levels in this game is stupidly awesome and impressive and the characters are super cool, although a lot are just copies or outright stupid ass inclusions like Gold and silver Mario and Peach. |Final Thoughts| I loved Mario Kart. I love Mario Kart. I hate Mario Kart. This game is good. This game is utter garbage. Its definitely above the average score of a 5, but not great all the time (8), and for me its not good (7) all the time. Its decent (6) for me and can be good, but never really good. 6.5, it's above decent. Again, I play a lot of racing games. If this game is your bread and butter, good for you. Just know there's games that do a lot of what this game does much much much better.
