For Mario fans and those who love creating things in general, Super Mario Maker offers a great package. The robust creation tools will keep you busy with ideas and if you ever find yourself short on inspiration, you can play over 1 million community-created levels that have been uploaded so far. With Coursebot providing several bases for you to get started, even if you don’t want to create something from scratch there’s something for you in Super Mario Maker.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker shines because it can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of gaming skill. The simple mechanics and slow pace of the game make it perfect for those new to console gaming. If you have someone in your life who maybe plays Angry Birds, Flappy Bird or whatever other bird is the word these days, but is hesitant to get into console gaming, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a great link between those worlds.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Overall Smash Bros. for 3DS is an excellent addition to the series. It offers boat-loads of single player content that can hold your attention for hours. The game includes great multiplayer options bringing your friends together. Fighting your rivals in an online mode that is actually playable unlike Brawl. Somehow Nintendo managed to squeeze every drop of power out of the 3DS and deliver a close to console experience as possible; although it still feels like an appetizer to the Wii U version.

All in all, I recommend this game for all fans of either Zelda, Dynasty Warriors or just action fans in general. It’s a fun and exciting action game and while it did have flaws I found the game’s good aspects made up for them. Hyrule Warriors is fun and enjoyable, and provides an interesting take on the Zelda mythos and a wonderful celebration for the series.

In the end One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a step in the right direction for the series but still has its faults. Though its gameplay can be repetitive at times there is fun to be had in the Coliseum mode and the games graphics are drop dead gorgeous. However, the price of admission is way too high for this digital only release. I would wait to set sail until the title drops in price.

Shovel Knight is simply one of the best platformers I’ve ever played. Its gameplay is finely tuned offering tons of variety per stage. It manages to combine all of these game elements so well it was hard to put down and kept me coming back for more. Yacht Club Games really ran with the 8-bit style and showed their labor of love for pixel art and tight gameplay. If you’re looking for a fresh platformer to play then dig up Shovel Knight. This is the best Mega Man game you’re going to play for a long time.

It manages to blend together old tracks with the new and provides new playable characters never before seen in the Mario Kart series. Playing as the koopalings is one of the highlights of the game and it’ll be no surprise to me if everyone has a favorite once they’ve gotten their hands on the game.

As many Nintendo fans know, there are several major titles slated for release on Wii U this year. If Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a sign of things to come, then the time to own a Wii U is now.

Overall Bravely Default is a game that has given me faith in the JRPG genre. It showcases that not every turn-based game has to be a boring slogfest and while the story doesn’t deviate too far from JRPG standards, the dialogue is clever enough to be enjoyed instead of feeling annoying.

Unepic

Overall, if you’re looking for a humorous dungeon crawler with a unique feel to the weapons and a unique brand of humor, Unepic serves quite well. There are quite a few boss encounters in the game to keep you entertained and the dialogue and humor are second to none compared to other eShop releases. For RPG fans who have been dying for an experience on the Wii U outside of Monster Hunter, definitely try Unepic.

Skylanders SWAP Force

Skylanders SWAP Force has a lot of content to cover. This game is jam packed with things to do, and as long as your collection keeps growing you’ll find more and more things to to occupy your time. The main problem is the cost of growing your collection. Still, with the starter pack alone, you have a game that is polished, smooth, and a lot of fun to play. There are a few annoyances with multiplayer balance and the baffling flying issue, but all in all, Skylanders SWAP Force is a fun game that you shouldn’t turn your back on if you have the cash.

Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure

Overall, the story arc of the game is worth experiencing if you’re a Scribblenauts fan. It’s even better if you’re a fan of DC Comics. Starite missions are fun and varied and the storylines that progress are worth experiencing, but the filler missions as you move from story to story are a bit bland.

Rayman Legends is a must play title for any Wii U owner. From my understanding the experience is a great one on any console, but some of the more interactive sections have been replaced with button prompts on other consoles. The game may have been delayed for launch on other consoles, but at its core Rayman Legends was always a Wii U title and it shows in execution. This game deserves to be played by every Wii U owner, because it was crafted specifically with you in mind.

Simply put, Frozenbyte puts some big name developers to shame when it comes to making a competent port. Trine 2: Director’s Cut adds more features, superior touch screen controls, and loads more content than any other console version available. The artwork will pleasantly surprise you and force you to look up at your tv constantly.

Indeed, it’s one of the best social videogames I’ve ever played. But make no mistake, it is a social game, and our Miis will find no lasting significance here. Running rampant beneath a plethora of timeless classics, they can all but fulfill Nintendo’s latest assertion: that there is, in fact, something for everyone.
