Crossy Road - Endless Arcade HopperiOS
Crossy Road is not a game that shoots for the moon, but totally nails exactly what it’s going for. Better yet, it’s completely free to download and play. If you’re looking for another game that fits into the free moments of your day, do yourself a favor and download Crossy Road. Chances are, you won’t regret it.
Not all is lost. At the heart there is a really good, even revolutionary game engine here. But at some point it was massively corrupted by the desire to make it free to play and many missed deadlines. You can tell that wasn’t the end goal as 22 Cans even makes fun of free to play in the PC version — calling it “dirty.”
All in all, VVVVVV on iOS is as solid a port as we could hope to get. It runs great, controls just fine, and offers the same excellent gameplay that’s been available on other platforms for some time. If you haven’t played VVVVVV, this is as good a time as any. Any platform will do, but the iOS version stacks up just fine against the others.
SXPD is meant to be just the first installment of a larger series, and we certainly think it’s got promise. The artwork is undeniably hip and beautiful, but the storyline could use a bit more depth in the place of mindless action. Similarly, the 3D gameplay could use more variety. If SXPD wants to succeed, it should focus more on the personalities and minds of its heroines and less on how they look in leather.
METAL SLUG DEFENSEiOS
Thanks to its well-balanced defense gameplay, generous freemium model, and competitive online matches, Metal Slug Defense is a definite Must Have. It’s a change of pace from the series’ twitchy arcade action, but it features the same familiar characters and style. It perfectly complements the original games while successfully creating something brand new for the mobile platform.
Godzilla - Smash3iOS
You’ve almost certainly played a match-3 game like Godzilla – Smash3 before, so we think the developers missed an opportunity to create an epic intense monster-battling game. Still, it’s a reasonably well-done freemium puzzler, with lots of levels and gameplay variety, plus sharp background graphics.
SOULCALIBUR Unbreakable SouliOS
I know that most developers and publishers are into creating games to make money, but burying a fun fighting mechanic behind such a steep paywall seems like a waste to me. I would much rather pay a premium for the game and receive enough gems through playing, win or lose. That way, how far I make it is based on my skill and effort, rather than my wallet.
Warhammer 40,000: CarnageiOS
Some games are deep, strategic experiences meant to test you mentally, while others just give you a sword and a gun and send you forth to kill stuff. Warhammer 40,000: Carnage belongs in the latter category, and it does not disappoint one bit in that regard.
Talisman: Digital EditioniOS
If you’re looking for a way to play Talisman online with random opponents, then this app will surely disappoint you. However, if you’re looking for an excellent single-player version of Talisman to pass the time with, then this app will mostly satisfy you. And if you are looking for a way to play the game in-person with friends with all the streamlining and automation that a digital version provides, then smash the buy button right now.
Hearthstone: Heroes of WarcraftiOS
Cards shimmer with special effects to indicate their abilities– they’ll cloud over with smoke when they’re stealthy, or flutter in the wind when they have extra attacks. The card art is evocative, with many familiar Warcraft faces like trolls and murlocs. And the epic cards, when you encounter them, will blow you away with their devastating attacks.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2iOS
From the fast-paced combat and simplicity of the controls to just having New York as your playground, it’s a game that moves really well. If you’re a fan of the webslinger, or someone who hasn’t played a good superhero game in a while, do yourself a favor and give this one a try.
Everyone loves a good challenge, but for some players, Wayward Souls may be too much. Even for the most hardened of players, this game presents a true test of skill and requires quite a bit of luck as well. It could use some tweaks to the enemies, the rate of spells, and health drops. Still, for those of us that enjoy a challenge, Wayward Souls will provide lots and lots of hours of pain– I mean, fun.
iOOTP Baseball 2014 EditioniOS
iOOTP is everything a baseball sim fanatic could hope for. Having control of everything your team does on and off the field is as addicting an experience as one could hope for. It may not be for everyone, but we definitely would encourage anyone with an interest in sports or strategy games to give iOOTP 14 a try. You may just end up getting hooked.
This isn’t a game most people would have expected from the Hitman franchise, but it works wonderfully. Hitman Go is a bold game that takes big risks, but those risks pay off big time. Whether you’re a fan of the franchise or not, this is one to check out.
With so many card games on the iPad, is Yomi a worthy addition to your digital card game collection? I think it is, because there is virtually nothing else like this game on the App Store. That may not automatically make it a Must Have for you, but it’s certainly worth a look, especially if you are a fan of fighting games or card battle games. If you are a fan of both, like me, than buying it is a no-brainer.
R.B.I. Baseball 14iOS
RBI Baseball is a fun game that will appeal to both casual gamers and baseball aficionados. Each game only lasts 15 minutes, so for those of you looking for a good pick-up-and-play baseball game, RBI Baseball is for you.
Family Guy: The Quest for StuffiOS
As you can tell from these examples, the actions in The Quest for Stuff range from being funny, to absurd, to very “mature rated”. Not that you should expect anything else from a Family Guy game. It’s these actions that give this game much of its life. How much life that is for you depends on how much of a fan of Family Guy you are, and whether the freemium model and wait times turn you off from unlocking all of the game’s content.
Sometimes You DieiOS
Detailed artwork, music that lasts more than thirty seconds, and a complex story can all deepen an experience beyond the basic concept in a game. Sometimes You Die is worth a try, but just because it shuns those artistic elements doesn’t mean they’re not worthwhile.
From the visuals and sound to the controls and difficulty, everything about this game just works. If you’re looking a new experience that doesn’t take hours to complete, you should invest the time it takes to explore Monument Valley. It’s a truly nice place to visit, and you may end up wanting to live there.
Spunk and MoxieiOS
But don’t let that scare you away from this fantastic runner/platformer. Just look at it like a challenge waiting to be conquered, and go ahead and pick it up from the App Store.
A Dark RoomiOS
If you’re still on the fence, you can play the game here in a browser window. I never played text-based adventures in my youth, but I got sucked up in the world of A Dark Room, and that’s more than I can say for most games.
It’s not an easy game, and luck isn’t always on your side. Nor is it flashy; most of the action takes place in text boxes and resource menus. But if you meet the game halfway, you’ll probably forget you ever wanted to play flashy, action-packed games, at least for a while. Out There is something special.
Despite these complaints, Tengami is a beautiful game that’s worth a look for anyone who enjoys puzzles and great-looking adventure games. It has a few kinks to work out before it’s a Must Have, but it’s still a satisfactory experience.
Such nitpicking aside, Word Puttz is amazingly entertaining. Jackbox has a solid handle on engaging game play and humor, and the creatively simple premise here creates a ton of entertaining and intelligent word play. So, aside from some optional freemium-based squabbles, Word Puttz has managed to quickly become our favorite word game this year.
Super Obstacle BoyiOS
All of these issues are fixable, and I’d love to see them addressed in an update. Until then, however, I’ll hold off recommending Super Obstacle Boy to everyone. It’s a decent purchase for people who love tough platformers, but it doesn’t stand out in the genre as is.
