I may not have nostalgia for the game, but it’s satisfying for me to play. I can spend a couple of hours making money and gaining exp at the same time, then hop off to do something else. I can change classes at will, trying new builds and gameplay features. I had fun, and I hope you are willing to give it a chance too. For those of you that prefer the other version, fear not. It’s still around, and they’ll receive content at the same time. But for me? I’ll be Unchained.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare retreads old ground in the hopes of calling back to the good old days and does so in the most spectacularly polarizing way possible. If you can ignore or forgive the Shock and Awful approach to the singleplayer, then there’s still a lot to appreciate here. Although everything you’ll encounter is largely uninspired and derivative, Infinity Ward has managed to beautifully execute on the moment-to-moment gameplay in a way that will keep me coming back despite the over abundance of stellar competition.

To be quite frank, if this wasn’t a battle royale game, and didn’t lean so heavily on the Games Workshop aesthetics, I’d probably be a bit more into it. As it stands, I wasn’t overly impressed with the play style of the game, and I was definitely unimpressed with the toxicity displayed on the game’s chat. Unless you’re a diehard battle royale fan, Maelstrom probably isn’t worth your time, and even if you are, the bugs, poor matchmaking and lack of balance between ships is liable to be a turnoff.

Caravan Stories offers something enjoyable, and if you can overlook the monetization. I could not do that. I don’t hate the Stamina system, since it does encourage you to try other characters in your party, and that’s fine. There is depth and enjoyment to be had if you can get through the minefield of microtransactions.

I had quite a bit of fun with Rise of Legions, and this is one of those games that I’ll keep around post-review. I might not dedicate a ton of my limited spare time to the game, but I can definitely see hopping on to grind out dailies and weeklies on a regular basis and building up my decks. I give RoL 4 out of 5 shuffles due to its innovative take on MOBA games, simple but clean graphics, solid community, and fun gameplay lacking in noticeable bugs.

Black Desert doesn’t have what I’m looking for. It’s a far from a perfect game, but it’s serviceable in its own way. I can’t recall a single memorable quest or moment in the story, and almost nothing in the game is explained. The veterans, for the most part, are willing to help players figure things out. Having friends already in the game will also help. There is still a great deal to do to make it a fantastic MMO, but I love that you can without a doubt play this world your way.

It can be challenging, and overwhelming at first, but if you stick with it you start to pick things up. It can be a good bit of mindless fun. I found myself wandering over to it towards the end of the day, when my brain was feeling a bit mushy, as it’s a great game to just mindlessly zone out and fly around in. Steambirds Alliance is a solid 4 out of 5 propeller blades, based on its current trajectory.

Legends of Aria does not shatter many barriers as an open sandbox MMO, but for fans of the genre, the price tag of 30 bucks is not unreasonable. There are always new ways to play, community servers to explore, and friends to make. There are still improvements to be made, but I enjoyed my time in this world, and may just find myself back in it again to continue my growth as a warrior-smith. I spent most of my time in Legends of Aria playing alone, though I would have more fun playing with a group of people.

I enjoy the gameplay, and the amount of missions and things to do. There are missions and achievements that are easy to complete for worthwhile rewards. The cash shop is where it all falls apart though. The cost of summons absolutely baffles me. It costs 300 Rubies to summon 10+1 characters, for special events or normal summons. Granted, there are a fair amount of free rubies you can get in the game.

Frankly, I’m getting tired of nostalgia driven cash grabs, and ultimately that really is what Dr. Mario World boils down to. There’s nothing innovative or keen about it. This has become a habit of Nintendo’s small fleet of mobile games. It’s not surprising, but it is disheartening, considering the quality of what the Switch is doing, that Nintendo mobile would just put out so much rubbish. Whoever is heading the department should be sacked.

Teppen is a card game that’s fast, easy to learn, and has few lulls in combat, other than waiting on more mana. Simply having more characters to play as, as well as a better, less aggravating card creation system would make this far more enjoyable.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers

While the combat rework does detract somewhat from the expansion in varying degrees, Shadowbringers remains a stellar experience, the absolute best that Final Fantasy XIV has brought by a long margin. If you’ve never played XIV, now is a great time to get started; and if you put the game aside, it’s a great time to jump back in. Shadowbringers stands as proof that subscription MMOs can still deliver content worth the monetary value, with the right team behind the curtains.

Dota Underlords

Dota Underlords is all about learning while you go and being able to adapt and react to situations. If you can’t do that, you’ll never climb. Or dive, since this is an Underworld thing. I still recommend if you’re remotely interested in tactical gameplay to give it a shot. There is an incredible amount of possibility in the various team comps and gameplay styles. And for this price point (free!), it is worth at least trying a few matches. I don’t know if this is going to be the genre to overthrow the Battle Royale, but it’s nice to see something new.

Honestly? I enjoyed this MMO quite a lot, even as a mobile game. It fairly gave pretty great items for logging in, including rare mounts and costumes for repeated logins. The gameplay was simple but still enjoyable, and there were plenty of options for classes and things to see/do. The only major complaint for me is still positive, because wow does it ever feel like WoW!

Durango: Wild Lands

I’m going to go ahead and give Durango one of my rare 4.5 out of 5 dinosaur scores. There is a plethora of stuff to do even as a free player, without feeling paywalled or time gated. As far as I’ve seen there are no skill caps that you have to buy your way out of or any such nonsense. The graphics are good, the controls (outside of combat especially) feel comfortable, and for a mobile MMORPG of its type, the story is even sensible, and ties into gameplay aspects. So yeah, go ahead and give it a download and see why over 10 million other folks worldwide have done the same.

At the end of the day though, stein.world is a free game, so there’s really nothing but some time to be lost in giving it a try. You might just find yourself charmed by the game and wishing to devote your time to it. Or, like me, you might get frustrated with inventory management and resource grinding, and decide to just move on to pastures made from polygons instead of pixels.

If you’re looking for good graphics, an original setting, and have money just falling out of your pockets that you’d like to shove into a mobile game? Sure, go for it! Really though, I think there are probably some better choices out there for most people. I give RAID a 3.5 out of 5 Gachapons for its own merits. Unfortunately, it’s just not as exciting as a guy exploding through a table.

I give Brown Dust a solid 4.5 out of 5 Gachapons. It’s got a solid story, great graphics, engaging gameplay (that lets you bypass the grind), and one of the best combat systems I’ve seen in an RPG, mobile or otherwise, for quite some time. If the fanservice doesn’t bother you overmuch, and you can overlook a couple oddly glaring typos, then there’s a solid chance that you’d really enjoy this title.

I felt this was frankly really creepy and stalkerish. Like a guy showing up at a girl’s house when she wouldn’t return his phone calls. At this point, I really just feel like telling them, “It’s not me, it’s you.” Overall, I’m going to give Exocraft a 1.5. I feel like it’s going to have a certain appeal to a very small audience, but for most people it’s better to just skip this one.

Again, seeing as I felt like I was fighting against the controls, which really reduced my engagement, I’m loathe to suggest to anyone else that the game isn’t fun. I think for some people that LifeAfter is going to fill a much needed niche in the mobile gaming world. For me, however, it just leaves some boxes unchecked. Despite this, I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 brains. It’s got some impressive features for a mobile survival game.

It’s polished, it is loaded down with content, but at the end of the day, that cash shop stares you in the face. I have no problem with a game trying to make money to keep the lights on, but I draw the line with easy access to spending real money to gain power in a PVP game. I could be a little forgiving if it only had the “one” cash shop option – but with Blue Diamonds coming with Opals, which unlocks yet another, stronger cash shop chest, I could not.

I give Rangers of Oblivion overall 2.5 coconuts out of 5. It didn’t do anything in particular to shine, and the cultural insensitivity really put me off. If you’re really hard up for an Android or iOS platform Monster Hunter style game, Rangers of Oblivion could work for you. So long as you don’t mind looking like someone who’s never heard of the sun, let alone seen it.

Back when I played EverQuest, we used to joke about installing a toilet in your gaming chair, so you didn’t miss anything when you had to go to the bathroom. Now, I take my game with me wherever I go. I just have to make sure I don’t drop it in the toilet. Ragnarok M gets 4 out of 5 stars. If it was an original game and not a remake, I very likely would have given it 5.
