Unpacking

I ended Unpacking with a huge smile on my face. Offering a truly unique storytelling experience, one few games can really compare to, I loved seeing a developer very much go their own way and try something different, especially since it all came together so wonderfully.

BRIGANDINE The Legend of Runersia

All of that said, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia offers an intriguing point of entry with a story told from many different perspectives, a ton of gameplay over its many campaigns, and a ton of options to strategize and plan out your upcoming attacks.

Postal 4 is as much fun as watching someone laugh at their own farts.

Dungeons of Dreadrock

Scott MacDonaldMay 15, 2022
A creative and clever experience from start to finish, Dungeons of Dreadrock simply should not be missed. It’s a brilliant little puzzler and an endearing homage to both dungeon crawlers and action-puzzlers. Just be prepared to die, and remember, there’s no shame in getting a hint or two (or five).

Insurmountable

Insurmountable revitalizes the tired roguelike genre with its new setting and careful, slow-going mechanics, but it can feel a bit stale after a summit or two so it’s best to play this one in short bursts.

Get-A-Grip Chip and the Body Bugs

Scott MacDonaldMay 11, 2022
Get-a-Grip Chip, and its educational sequel, is a charming platformer with a ton of heart. Its simple mechanics and complex designs will get your heart racing and your fingers twitching. For such a tiny robot, there sure is a lot to love here. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for Chip’s next adventure.

Dandy & Randy DX

Dandy & Randy DX isn’t perfect, but it’s also a lot of fun for fans of retro gaming. While it doesn’t do a ton to elevate itself above the pack, there is one clever twist before the end of the game that made the entire experience that much more enjoyable. And honestly, for the price point, it’s hard to argue much with what the game accomplishes.

This War of Mine: Final Cut

It’s impossible not to think about what real people in different parts of the world are going through right now when playing This War of Mine in 2022. That’s part of the point. Buying a video game perhaps isn’t the best way to support those people, but This War of Mine: Final Cut captures the true horror of war in a way that few video games will even try, let alone succeed, and for that, it’s an absolute must-play.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising

With its gorgeous art direction, stylish combat, and substantial content offering, it’s a game that arguably offers more than it needed to. If you can make it past the slowish opening act, you’ll find that Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a title that is more than capable of standing on its own, to the extent where I can’t help but recommend it, irrespective of whether you are excited for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes or not.

Salt and Sacrifice

Salt and Sacrifice isn’t just a great game, but a great sequel. It’s the result of building upon the things that worked so well in the first game, tweaking the things that might not have worked so well, and cleverly taking the occasional mechanical risk here and there in order to ensure that Salt and Sacrifice truly felt like its own game instead of just “Salt and Sanctuary 2.”

Re:Turn 2 – Runaway may not be perfect, but it ironed out enough of the bumps present within the original Re:Turn to keep me hopeful. Shortcomings aside I still really enjoy the series that Red Ego has been building for us, and I’m hoping that they’ll continue to improve with yet another return to the series in the future.

Kraken Academy!!

Kraken Academy!! surprised me with its zany humor and delightful time-looping mechanics. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent on campus, making friends with classmates by bringing a goat to a horse race, going on QTE dates, and summoning poop demons (don’t ask).

Ghost on the Shore is more than just a ghost story; it’s a look into what remains of us after death, both real and metaphysical.

LEGO Builder's Journey

LEGO Builder’s Journey is an experience I can’t help but recommend, both to fans of puzzle games and anyone who enjoys a slower, more thoughtful experience.

Trek to Yomi is absolutely worth side-scroll slicing your way through the belly of the underworld for.

Super Mega Zero

Josh SpeerMay 03, 2022
Visually, Super Mega Zero is simple but attractive. There’s lots of neon-colored artwork, and each world has a distinct style despite looking very similar to the others. The last world, in particular, was ominous, with dark shades of purple and orange, and a soundtrack to match. Speaking of the music, I really loved the chiptunes here, and they kept me engaged with the tricky yet addictive gameplay.

B.I.O.T.A.

It’s not a perfect game, and I was definitely frustrated by the many instant death traps, but it’s still a game that retro fans should check out. And that goes double if the game ever makes its way to game consoles.

Anuchard

Switch

Daymon TrapoldApr 27, 2022
As a whole, Anuchard is a fun game. It’s quirky, it’s perfectly pixely, and it combines city building and dungeon crawling surprisingly well. Unfortunately, the game gets bogged down by repetition, repetition, repetition.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter is another triumph by Frogwares, who continues to do justice to the world’s most famous detective.

Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread

Switch

Shane BoyleApr 24, 2022
Despite my gripes with pacing and some insane difficulty spikes when it comes to platforming, Blast Brigade is a true gem and a fantastic addition to the genre. The stellar presentation is a delightful send-up to 80’s action and Saturday morning cartoons, creating a Metroidvania that truly manages to feel unique despite being part of perhaps one of the most saturated genres in gaming.

DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT

PC

Jonathan TrusslerApr 24, 2022
Death Stranding simultaneously tedious and exciting, profound and inane, terrifying and laughable. Like the spectral beings that inhabit this post-apocalyptic America, it’s often shapeless and hard to comprehend. One thing is for sure though: it’s like no game you’ve ever played before.

Kombinera

Switch

Scott MacDonaldApr 23, 2022
Kombinera is a smart but vicious little puzzler. It doesn’t pull any punches. Fans of puzzle platformers should absolutely check it out but be warned: you’re bound to learn new some new colorful language before all is said and done. Despite its accessibility, it’s not for the faint of heart (or those with high blood pressure).

Lila’s Sky Ark

Josh SpeerApr 22, 2022
Visually, Lila’s Sky Ark is a wonderful game that’s full of crazy and unique ideas. I really appreciate that design, and it’s a large reason I decided to review the title. Likewise, the music is pretty keen in the game, and kept me engaged as I was playing. There are some really bombastic sound effects, though I do wish enemies had clearer sound cues before they attacked.

Ayo the Clown

PS5

Shane BoyleApr 22, 2022
Ultimately, despite my gripes, Ayo the Clown is a 2D platformer that I think does enough right to warrant checking out. With clever progression, tricky (albeit frustrating at times) level design and a delightful world with well-thought-out boss fights, there’s plenty to like for genre enthusiasts who can overlook the areas where Ayo the Clown stumbles.

Sokobos

Heather Johnson YuApr 22, 2022
Sokobos may have the premise of a potential Greek tragedy, but this game is anything but tragic. A fantastic, fresh take on the Sokoban formula, Sokobos provides players with plenty of brain-teasing adventures that’ll keep them occupied for the length of an entire odyssey or two.
