Dragon Quest II can be viewed as the series’ gangly teenage stage. It’s a bit slow and awkward at times, and it presents neat new ideas that don’t reach their full potential until Dragon Quest III and beyond. If you’re a Dragon Quest fiend, or you’re just a collector of mobile JRPGs, by all means pick it up. If you’re new to all this excitement and are unsure of where to start, pick up Dragon Quest IV, or wait until Dragon Quest III inevitably rears its rough rump.

Dragon Quest II is a lesson in how far the JRPG has come. It's not fresh, but then you wouldn't expect that from a game that's more than 25 years old. An intriguing look back at what the JRPG used to be, Dragon Quest II has enough going for it to make it a little more than a curio.
