What happens when everyone is stuck in the same time loop, without knowing? Alt-Frequencies is an audio mystery game where you use the airwaves to open the world’s eyes to the truth. Record, rewind time and broadcast snippets of radio shows to expose radio hosts, conspiracy theorists, politicians, underground activists - and a dog. By redistributing information, you change what happens in the next 3 minute time loop and impact both news cycles and the lives of the people behind them. Listen as their personal stories evolve, in a world that seems to stand still.

Alt-Frequencies plays on this fantasy, reducing an otherwise monumental effort to a simple swipe on your phone screen. There’s something deeply satisfying about hearing an opinion you disagree with, and sending a rebuttal which is instantly answered. While it may be fairly simple, the record and send system at the core of Alt-Frequencies steals the show. Accidental Queens once again manages to use non-conventional gameplay systems to tell a story that is grounded, relevant and compelling. I just wish I had a little more time with it.
Alt-Frequencies then is an excellent concept let down by its execution. If a bit more was put into fleshing out the machinations behind the time-loop and what the government’s official line for implementing it was it could have been great. Some more flexibility in the reactions would have been good too. There are canned responses for clips that aren’t relevant to the stations, and the scope here for play would have been fantastic but it never delivers on the promise of just constantly feeding radio station hosts with a barrage of constant rubbish.
