About this game

Developer: Spry Fox
Content Rating: Everyone

In Alphabear, you spell words by selecting letters on a grid. When you use letters that are next to each other, bears appear! The more letters you use in an area, the bigger the bear gets, and the more points you earn. Perform well enough, and you might just a win a bear of your own to keep forever.

Bears that you win can be used as powerups in future games! They increase the points you earn for using certain letters or spelling certain words, extend your timer, increase or decrease the frequency with which letters appear, and more!

There’s no other word game quite like Alphabear. Chipping away at uncharted land in each level feels good, as does watching your bear expand into a behemoth that’s bursting with point potential. The in-game dictionary is pretty expansive, too: I rarely find myself sputtering over the nonsensical rejection of a valid word. Also, the game accepts a pretty expansive list of swears. It’s evil, but sometimes getting rid of four red tiles in one go means having to offend your grandmother.

At the end of a level, the newly hatched bear will form a series of phrases using the words played during the game. You might have seen these on social media already. It's a silly little touch, but it adds another bit of meta to the experience. ...Even then, the bears each have cooldown periods and the other currency suffers from diminishing returns over the course of a day, so players who buy unlimited honey may still feel stifled. Spry Fox wants players to come back day after day; I'm fine with that, but I know there are many out there who aren't.

Alphabear’s touch controls work well, the graphics are great and the gameplay is an innovative twist on your basic spelling puzzle game. As adorable as it is addictive, there's even an option to buy unlimited in-game currency which helps cut down on most of the paywall waiting.
