Xeodrifter is the story of an interstellar drifter traveling the stars on a simple mission of exploration. We join our nomad as he embarks on the investigation of a small cluster of four planets in the omega sector, after a collision with a rogue asteroid damages his warp core.

A scan of the neighboring planets reveals a number of energy signatures, which may provide the special material needed to replace the damaged warp core and get back to cruising through the cosmos. However, what began as a routine away-mission to fix his engine quickly spirals into a dangerous game of search, shoot, and survive.

Xeodrifter (Wii U) is otherwise the same game you loved on 3DS, including all pros and cons. You’re still fighting the same boss six times, and you’re still bravely trekking back with no health pickups after boss encounters. There’s still a little too much reliance on invisible passageways to find all the health and weapon upgrades. ...I highly recommend Xeodrifter no matter what system you get it on—and by getting it on one, you’ll automatically have it on both. It’s a win-win!

What's remarkable about it all is that Xeodrifter crams this much into only a few hours. My time with the game topped out somewhere between three and four hours, and that includes fishing out hidden rooms and tracking down a few remaining health and gun upgrades after beating it the first time. Yes, that's brief, but the pacing feels just right, giving you enough time to master the game's mechanics without those mechanics becoming stale.

Even though the routine is familiar, Xeodrifter still provides fun exploration augmented by nostalgia. A game doesn’t need to be groundbreaking to be entertaining, and Xeodrifter does an admirable job following the prescribed orbit of the classics in the genre.
