Summary

The game picks up directly where its Nintendo 3DS predecessor SENRAN KAGURA Burst left off, and follows the Hanzo & Hebijo Shinobi Academies as they battle for good and evil respectively. This time however there is a greater evil at work, as the tyrannous tycoon behind the Hebijo Academy is hell-bent on raining terror across all of Japan by utilising a destructive army of summoned demons! This great danger thrusts the girls together and forces them to unite and work as one in a way the series has never seen before.

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson knows what it is. It never apologizes for that, I just wish it was a better game. There are plenty of games like it; Onechanbara is an easy reference point because it just released, and it hosts much better combat mechanics. Still, players will obviously come into this game for one reason, and this outing fits that bill. Here is hoping the upcoming PS4 version actually has the game play to back up the fan service.

It’s a shame that the actual gameplay is so stale and repetitive because Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is polished in many other areas. The only upside to the straightforward presentation, and lack of depth outside of creepy mini games, was that I could breeze through it. There’s only so many hours I can comfortably play this game.

Camera and targeting issues aside, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is a very fun game, especially for fans of the franchise. Both in terms of story and gameplay, it finds a middle ground between Burst and Shinovi Versus. I’m enjoying it and if you’re okay with the subject matter, you might, too.
