Replaying Pokémon Crystal for the first time in years reminded me of what the Pokémon series could be. As someone who feels that the latest series entries have become a bit convoluted in their added features and too focused on linear storytelling, it was refreshing to dive back into a Pokémon game that gives players a ton of autonomy. I’m of the opinion that Pokémon Crystal is the ultimate representation of what the series can and should be.
Pokémon Crystal hasn’t aged as well as many may have liked, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you’re looking for a serious early ‘00s gaming time warp, you could do far worse than Generation II’s third game. It’s universally beloved for a reason.
Pokemon Crystal’s eShop debut is everything you wanted it to be and more. It’s a staple of the Pokemon franchise overall and should certainly have been in the running for remakes like Heart Gold and Soul Silver ended up getting. It’s a fantastic, engaging nostalgia rush that’s just begging you to jump right in. What are you waiting for? You should already have it by now.
