About this game

Developer: Spike Chunsoft
Content Rating: Mature

A unique dungeon-exploring RPG with school-life elements. In the world called Aterra where the Star God is worshipped, monsters have begun to spawn from the mysterious labyrinth. However, the Star God has imbued certain young adults - Disciples - with the power to fight monsters, as well as create Star Children to aid in the battle. Only Disciples and Star Children can defeat the monsters, and you, as God's Gift, have an additional weighty task: to bond with seven other Disciples and bear many Star Children to help your world survive!

With fun characters, unique and engaging combat, a cute central conceit, and an irrepressibly cool soundtrack, Conception II is a bundle of JRPG joy. A few issues with the presentation point toward porting pains — and perhaps to the Vita version's scandalous status as Spike-Chunsoft's true love — but they're minor faults in an otherwise impressive package, and shouldn't scare monogamous Nintendo gamers away from committing fully to this thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Some of the most exciting RPGs work with relationship building, like Persona and Fire Emblem, but this just takes it in a bizarre direction. Merely giving players a chance to pair up isn't enough; the actual relationship building needs have genuine developments and substance, and Conception II hits all the wrong notes.

The dating side is just interesting enough to keep you roped in, and the battle system grows on you after a bit of time to be something pretty rewarding. When I got into it, I couldn't put this game down. Outside the music and presentation, it's not outstanding in any way, but the mix of dungeon crawling and dating sim worked for me.
